Postby jippypop on Mon Aug 10, 2009 9:42 pm

I have a question. Can an unrelated Harlequin male and Harlequin female breed? If so what would the babies look like? Thanks

Yes, you can breen Harly x Harly's. Harly's are occasionally crossed back to GW's, B&G's, or sometimes even other species of macaws. A second generation Harlequin Macaw should look like any other Harly out there, although the colors could be more intense, or perhaps they'll be a little more green than blue, or well, who knows for sure? I've seen some B&G Hybrids, that, to the untrained eye, looked exactly like other Blue and Golds... the only differences? The birds were a little more green than normal, perhaps the yellow coloration was just a tad off, or perhaps the beak wasn't completely black. These hybrids could be anywhere from 50-75% B&G. So in short, what you get from offspring can certainly vary.

CritterBreeders say they sell second generation Harlequin Macaw Babies, so one could assume that both parents are Harley's. However, second generation Harly's could be Harly's bred back to a Greenwing or even a B&G, although they are normally known as Jubilee's or Harligold's, respectively.

Here's a picture of two harlequin macaws, and as you can tell, one has more blue than the other.

A "Fiesta Macaw" is a 3rd generation hybrid, with one parent being a Harlequin.
