Payton is going to the doctor

Postby Gabe on Tue Feb 03, 2009 7:15 pm

Hello,

I have not posted here in many years, but decided to become active again and see if there are still some old friends --- or possibly some new ones. :D

I have corresponded with Linda L. a few times over the 13 years I've shared my home with my flock. Linda is most familiar with my Baby Payton -- lovebird, now 10 years old! Payton was dying in a petstore in 1999 when I paid for her and her $300 vet bill! She has survived lead poisoing, a bacterial infection she caught while being boarded and moves from Chicago to Austin, TX and now Charleston, S.C. I find she will now have to muster more courage and more antibodies, as she will go to the doctor I am hopeful tomorrow.

I thought I heard a couple of wet sneezes this weekend. This a.m. I noticed lethargy and Payton closing her eyes just as she had been awaken. Now, as she sits on my finger while I hunt and peck at the keyboard, I have heard a series of wet sneezes and a her wanting to sit on me more than usual. Normally she would be following her buddy the conure onto avenues of mischief, or taunting and bullying her friend the Orange-Wing Amazon who worships and fears Payton at the same time. Instead, Baby Payt wants the attention of her mom and a warm perch on which to sit and preen.

Payton is eating, pooping fine, preening and flying, but these sneezes and her lack of activity have me worried. She seems to always be sleepy since this weekend. I also notice she is a bit fluffed out. I have not had a sick bird for quite awhile. Can someone refresh my memory as to what to look for/ask about? This will be our first visit to our SC vet, but I have researched and found the doctor in Mt Pleasant to be highly recommended. Anyone from this area and have familiarity with the Exotic Animal Hospital on Hiway 17?

Just looking for someone with more knowledge than me to lend some advice. Any and all is much appreciated! I plan on visiting again and will update you all on Payton's diagnosis. I am sure it is nothing a good dose of antibiotics can't cure, but she is my precious little survivor whom I dream about at night and whose presence I keep in my thoughts to help get me through the days.

p.s. Payton's conure is 13 and her Amazon is in her 30s! We have all been together a loooong time. They have -- over time -- morphed into the perfect flock!

Nice to be here again. Thank you for any and all advice.

Tara

    Hi Tara!
Good to see you back here!

I would definitely have your avian vet check out this problem. It may be nothing but it's not something I would chance. Like you said, antibiotics can probably take care of what's wrong but you need to find out which "critter" is causing the symptoms you are seeing!
