Lovebird mating

Postby eblake38 on Sun Dec 14, 2008 6:30 pm

I have 3 lovebirds in one cage, 2 green black masked, and one cobalt blue black masked, they are not very old, about 6 months i guess, they are trying to mount each other, at first it was the 2 green ones, and now the blue is mounting a green one, looks to me as if they dont know which is female and who is male, or do i have some gay birds, please help me out with some advise, and no they are not with a box at this time, i was going to wait until they were older before i breed them.

Personally, I would DNA sex all three so you know what you have. At age 6 months, lovebirds are just coming into sexual maturity so the peaceful situation may or may not last much longer. You could have all males and you could also have all females. At this point, they are like teenagers and are experimenting. However, if two pair up, you will have a "third bird out" situation and the pair could turn on the remaining bird.

All this is speculation, since you don't know the gender of any of these birds. DNA sexing is where to start.
