Diarhea?

Postby CaesarSalade on Tue Oct 14, 2008 6:30 pm

I have my new little Fischer on Zupreem. I was glad he accepted the diet as I know it's better for him the just a seed diet. HOWEVER, I've noticed he CONSTANTLY is going to the bathroom. It is all over the place, even on the wall behind the cage. It just doesn't seem normal at all, it's even colored like the food (which looks like Trix cereal) I'm wondering what I need to do to fix this. I've had birds before, but this is new to me! Thanx

Diarrhea can be a symptom of dangerous diseases. Go to your vet. I know a lot of people say this, but it is the best thing for your pet.
And it is usually a good idea to give them a different diet.

The chemical dyes used to artificially color food can be very hard on kidneys and other organs. Please buy a good quality pellet that doesn't contain artificial dyes. Meantime, if your new bird hasn't already had his well-bird avian vet exam, this is the time! If he had his exam already, call your vet, describe the problem to a vet tech, and ask if your bird will heal on natural-color food or if he needs meds to rehydrate him and heal his kidneys.

Per my avian vet, a small bird diet that contains more than 40% pellets can cause death by kidney failure so it sounds like you need to add seed plus fresh food to your bird's diet. You also need to have him seen by your avian vet to determine if there's damage to the kidneys. Droppings tell a lot about the health of birds and it's wise to pay attention to what you are seeing. Please make that appointment ASAP!
