Lovebird faux brooding - help!!

Postby hdishaw on Tue Aug 12, 2008 9:26 pm

I have a pair of lovebirds. They have laid a clutch of eggs once before, but ended up breaking all the eggs. They laid more eggs about three weeks ago. I pulled the eggs after a few days (they don't sit on them and end up breaking them, so I let them keep the eggs but pull them once they're broken). Ever since I pulled the eggs the female is doing what can only be described as brooding behavior on the bottom of the cage. She lays there about 80% of the day as if she is sitting on eggs (but there are none there). The remainder of her day is spent collecting and shredding nesting material. I didn't think much of it at first because in all other respects she is alert and perky and seems perfectly fine. But this has been going on for over two weeks now and it is kind of odd? Is this okay? She didn't do this last time?

Any help or advice appreciated.

Regardless of the fact that you took away her eggs, your hen is still in breeding mode and the behavior is appropriate to that. If you are going to remove eggs, you need to replace them with fake eggs that she can sit on. Some hens will simply lay more eggs to replace what has been taken away so you're lucky in that respect.

To stop the behavior this time, you will need to completely rearrange her cage so that everything (perches, dishes, toys, etc) is different or just put her and her mate in another cage. Moving the cage to a different location may also be helpful in breaking the cycle.
