Molting??

Postby MSLoveBirds on Fri Apr 25, 2008 12:38 pm

I feel really dumb asking this question, but how do you tell if a peach faced lovie is going through a molt? One of mine seems to be losing feathers around his neck and no where else. I have had him a little over a year.

Birds molt by loosing tiny feathers, as well as larger feathers. If a particular spot is going bare or is just looking odd you could possibly account it due to plucking. Do you have any pictures? If the bird is plucking, you should consider seeing a vet to rule out medical reasons.

Also, you need to look at your setup... Does the bird have plenty of toys to play with and destroy? Enough room to get exercise? A healthy diet that includes fresh foods? Getting a good amount of sleep each night? (preferably 10-12 hours a night, or sleeping whenever the sun is down) Could he be plucked by one of the other birds? Anything changed recently to cause stress? Any irritants in the air? Such as smoke, perfume, teflon toxins, air fresheners, cleaners, etc? Does he get enough bathes?

Some times a bird that is molting will change in a way personality. They can get a little grumpy, or just want all the head rubs they can get.
