fertile eggs? not?

Postby hugs3005 on Tue Feb 19, 2008 10:35 am

hi all, I am trying to find out about my loves eggs. We have 5 total and she has been sitting on them, I ony see her out every now and then. The 5th egg was laid saturday I believe. I did not actually notice her sitting tighter until the 4th was laid, which was aroung thursday. I did witness the whole feeding and mating thing, I saw them mate at least twice. They were proven for there previous owner. Now I candled the eggs last night and saw nothing. Does this mean they are infertile and what should I do? I want them to breed and what not, how do I get them to do it again if these are infact infertile? Do I take them away now? take the nest box away for a few days, then put it back up again? do I have to wait the total incubation time, then take the eggs and the nest box away for a few days and let them try again? what? I cannot get them to eat much more then the pellet and seed they are on, some grain bread, but I do put the added calcium in the form of cuttlebones, oyster shell and liquid calcium in the water. Please advise me of this matter. thanks

You need to let them sit on them for the full incubation period and then give them a month or so to rest. That consists of taking the box away for at least a month, maybe more. Laying takes a lot of work/energy for a bird and she cannot be expected to lay again after only a few days rest. You need to make sure she is getting plenty of fresh veggies and some fruits along with lots of fresh water. make sure she has a good calcium source too like broccoli, spinach, cuttlebone, and hard-boiled eggs crushed in the shell.

Also, you will be able to candle each egg after about 5-7 days after the incubation started to see if they are fertile. That means that the first and second egg can be candled now but it will be a few days for the rest.

well thats what I am saying, they wont eat the fresh fruits and veggies, I have tried over and over, they won't touch it, I still put it in there cage, but they don't touch it.
I give them whole grain bread, which they eat, they have cuttlebone and they get liquid calcium in the water along with oyster shell in the food. I have covered the calcium part of it.

Thanks for letting me know about letting them rest at least a month, I figured that, but wanted to make sure. I am seeing nothing in the eggs, I will wait a few days and candle them again and cross my fingers. thanks

I think you are trying to candle the eggs too soon. Like it was stated above, wait a week or so, then candle them. Hopefully they are fertile!
