lovebird breeding

Postby hugs3005 on Sun Feb 03, 2008 7:58 pm

I am wondering how long it takes for a lovebird pair to go from start to finish in there process of breeding and laying eggs.

Mine have been in the process I guess for about 2-3 wks give or take. They were doing the nest, then I noticed him finally feeding her, then they mated one day, once that I saw, then almost each day after that, that was 4 days or so ago, and each day I see him feed her and I have seen them mate twice since the first day. I noticed he was doing his mating chatter like 3 days after they first mated? I don't have any eggs yet, still waiting for that, but just curious how long it all takes. I am new at this, can't you tell lol. thanks

Once you see a pair begin mating, it takes about 10 days before you see the first egg.

Are you sure you have a male/female pair? Have they been DNA or surgically sexed? If not, you could have a same gender pair that are perfectly capable of mimicking almost every action of a male/female pair except producing fertile eggs.

well supposedly they are male female pair. The lady I got them from had them sexed, and unless she is lying to me lol, they should be m/f. She said they have even had babies too before. I guess I will wait and see what happens then, I don't want to try and handle her now incase she has eggs in her, I don't want to break them. How else can I tell? I know she sits with her legs a little more played then he does. I am not sure how else to tell. I can do the dna thing, however like I said I don't know if I should handle her right now, just incase. Just I have seen them mate more then once and not in the same day. Is this normal activity, and should I expect eggs 10 days from the 1st mating? thanks for the reply
