Any insight?

Postby hannahlauren on Wed Jan 16, 2008 2:35 pm

I have two sibling lovebirds (Jolly & Peanut)that are about 7mos old and I don't know if they are male or female. Now... for the most part they get along just fine.
What's interesting is that it seems like in the morning Jolly is the slightly dominant bird and during the afternoon and evenings it's Peanut that is the dominant (even more so than Jolly was in the morning) bird. For example.. yesterday in the morning Jolly was nipping at Peanut's toes and Peanut was backing down for the most part. Then in the afternoon Peanut had his/her way with Jolly and wouln't let him/her near. Sometimes will even chase Jolly around the cage.

Note: They do NOT get very violant and hurt each other (at least not yet)

Sounds like these 2 get along, and yet they don't. The kind of behavior that you describe is well worth watching, as it could escalate to the point where one of these 2 becomes seriously injured. I would suggest that you DNA sex both of them so that you know what gender/genders you have. Two males are usually happy campers when housed together but hens tend to be more territorial than their male counterparts and that can lead to trouble.
