Nest Building?

Postby Firey Vixxen on Sun Sep 09, 2007 8:16 pm

Hey Peoples,
I was wondering how much nest building lovies do when they want to breed. Billie (Albino Eyering, sex unknown, ~4yo) has begun to thread grass in the spot where he normally sleeps. He (or she) doesn't have a friend, but has been courting the bells on his toys (headbobbing, dancing along perch, ect). I'm concerned as I don't want eggs as his/her diet is not good, he's only just beginning to relise apple quarters are not rocks, and actually yummy so i don't want to pull out the grass.
should i be worried?
should I pull out his bells for a little while?
FV

Eye-ring species of lovebird are known for their nest building abilities, at least Fischer's and Masks are well known for the talent! Their nests tend to fill up the space available and have intricate tunnels which allow them to reach the area where the eggs are laid/incubated. While the male may help the hen with this, it's the female that does the actual construction.

Removing the bells may help but it will only be for a short while. A lovie hen on a mission can be very determined!!! Try cutting back on the available daylight hrs to less than 8. Another thing that can trigger breeding is availability of an abundance of food. If a hen does not think there is enough food to feed her babies, she will not even consider nesting. You can cut back on any overabundance, making sure there's enough for her to eat without being able to feed an entire family.
