beak knocking

Postby AndiC on Sun Sep 02, 2007 11:18 pm

My recently acquired lutino has a couple of times done a new (new to me) behavior that I'm guessing means she's mad. She knocks on something with beak, like a person would knock on a door. It's been either a knock-knock or a knock-knock-knock and rather hard. It looks like she knows it will get attention, and it does. She's only done it a few times, so it's not been associated with anything in particular. She's done it in her cage and out of her cage. Once she wasn't interacting with anyone, just hanging out on her out of cage time. Another time she was in her cage. I don't recall what was going on at the time. The other time I'm aware of was when it was time to put her back in her cage because her behavior was getting aggressive. We haven't had a problem with getting her back in the cage. We just have her step onto a branch and transfer her into her cage and give her a treat. Usually human grade unsalted unshelled sunflower seeds by hand.

I'm glad to hear my bird isn't the only one doing it. I posted the same question on a different forum also. The reply I got there was that it's an expression of frustration meant to get attention. It certainly does that! Justine, does your bird do it a lot?
