how many lovebirds for my cage size?

Postby alumax on Tue Aug 14, 2007 10:37 am

I have a cage with dimensions 56 (l) x 16 (w) x 30 (h). I'm planning to get 2 lovebirds, but I'm thinking about getting one or two more. So would this be a good size for 4 birds? They would all be different kinds and mutations, so I would have them as pets, not to breed. Also, I know they tend to bond more to each other than to humans, so how hard would it be to keep them tame if I have 4 of them in a cage? On about half of the week my time is very limited, the other half is a bit better, and I'm planning to spend time with them and let them out of their cage. Also, are 2 lovebirds much louder than 4? Thanks.

Your cage is actually large enough to do what you want to do but all birds need to be put into the cage at the same time. In essence, you are setting up a "flight cage/aviary" on a very small scale but that's what it will be none the less.

Different species of lovebird have different personalities so I don't think I would mix species. Additionally, if you want to keep them all as pets, I would make sure they are all male. More than one hen in a flight can signal territory problems and you would really want to avoid that, if possible.

Thanks. Yes, I also thought the cage is pretty big. I just want to be sure that they have plenty of room. I would put them in the cage at the same time. They are all babies and not sexed, so I'm not sure if they would be all male. I was thinking that if they have enough space, they should get along?

When you have 2 birds in a large cage that do not get along, that cage is not big enough no matter how big it is! A dominant aggressive cage territorial hen can be a very nasty creature, indeed. Since these are babies, they are not sexually mature so you don't know what will happen once they become adults. If they seem to get along right now, it may or may not continue. All you can do is put them in the cage and make sure you pay attention to what's going on. I have several cages with multiple residents and I have to do this all the time. The minute I forget, I could end up with an injured or dead bird if it comes down to a matter of territory.

Okay, yes, I probably should make sure to have some smaller cage ready in case anything happens later on. Thanks for the advice. I now found out it looks like at least 2 of the four will certainly be males, one is certain to be female, so there is only one left that is not sexed. It would be 3 peachfaces and 1 mask, though I could also decide to get all four peachfaces (I just think the mask is the prettiest one and would love to have it).
