My new Lovie...

Postby Christine on Mon Jul 23, 2007 5:52 pm

Hello, I'm new to this chat, and I have recently bought a lovebird. He was a bit older when I got him (7 months), but now I've had him for over a month. He's very comfortable with his cage, but does not eat any fresh veggies or fruit. When he's out, he likes to chirp, but doesn't play much. He even has a huge outdoor play area. Also he seems to still be scared to death of me and bites frequently. What do I do? I really want to bond with my bird, but need some tips!

Christine and Saywer
Thanks,
Christine and Sawyer

Time and attention, attention and more attention will get you what you want with Sawyer. He has to learn to trust you and that takes time. While you know you won't hurt him, he has to learn that from first hand experience.

Sounds like he doesn't realize that veggies and fruit are edible. Try offering the veggies different ways. For example, try small chunks of fresh carrot. If he doesn't seem to care for that, try shredding the carrot. You can also try putting the carrot on a plate and you eat some of it. When Sawyer sees you eating it, he may decide that, if it's good enough for you, he's probably missing out on something worth having! :lol

Lovebirds are not generally fruit eaters so that may be wasted effort on your part but you can keep trying and see what happens.
