HELP, MY HEN WON'T BOND WITH A NEW MATE!

Postby peachielovebirds on Wed Jul 18, 2007 9:33 am

HI EVERYONE. I HAVE A VERY PROVEN DOUBLE VIOLET BLUE PIED HEN WHOS MATE DIED LAST YEAR. SHE IS ABOUT 5-7 YEARS OLD AND I HAVE PUT 3 DIFFERENT MALES IN WITH HER FOR A GOOD AMOUNT OF TIME TO NO AVAIL. SHE ATTACKED AND ALMOST KILLED THE FIRST MALE. WASN'T INTERESTED IN THE SECOND ONE, AND NOW HAS A BLUE VIOLET WHITEFACE IN WITH HER NOW. NEW CAGE FOR BOTH OF THEM, BUT SHE WON'T BOND. WHAT SHOULD I DO!! SHE IS A FAT HEALTHY BIRD WHO PRODUCES VERY NICE LOOKING CHICKS. THANKS
AMY

Separate them and let her live alone if that's what she wants.

I would recommend putting them in separate cages. How long have they been together? It can take a long time for them to bond, sometimes a year or more. Is the male sexed?

For now, both need to have their own cage and I would put those cages side by side until they get to know each other. Your hen's cage is HER cage and she will not accept an "intruder" in her home. Once they get to know/like each other, putting her in his cage is the way to go or put them both in a third, neutral cage (put him in first!).

Are you sure the potential mates were, indeed, males? Were they at least a couple of yrs old or were they younger birds? The ideal mate for her will be at least 3.

All the males I put in were 100% males I know. The male is still with her. They already were seperated and in cages next to eachother. Actually, she is starting to get closer with him. She is not harrassing him at all. I guess I will just give it time. Both birds are very healthy and I think the first mistake I made was putting a male in HER own cage. Now they are in a neutral cage together, and that seems to be working. Thanks everyone!
