lovebird baby

Postby bspahr@fuse.net on Fri Jul 13, 2007 7:49 pm

Can someone help and explain how to post a picture on this site. I have a lovebird color mutation that I am trying to figure out the proper terminology for its color. It is a peachface but it is turquoise with a white face.

Honestly, I don't know how to post pictures on this site. But you can go to the African Lovebird Society's picture library and look at the different mutations there to compare your bird to the ones shown to decide what color mutation it is.

From your description, your bird may be a white-faced blue. Go down to the "Blue" album and then click on the center picture of "White-faced" to look at different pictures.

Hey! That worked. Thanks mytielwoody! I will also look on the website Love'n let Aviary suggested.

Anyway, does anyone know the proper terminology for this color mutation?

He's too young to determine exact mutation but he's either a Dutch Blue (Aqua), Whiteface Blue (Turquoise) or a Seagreen Peachfaced. The reason I can't tell you anymore is because there are differences in adult coloring that will not be visible until the adult feathering is visible, roughly age 4-5 months.

    However, he's really cute! :)

HAHAHA, I'm sorry, I had to laugh after seeing the pics on there! I just recently sold two babies, the same exact colors to a couple here in MN! Your green one is a Medium Seagreen Violet. It looks violet in that pic at least, but Violet is so hard to get in pics! Here is a pic of the babies I just sold:

Too funny! That does look exactly like them. So how do you determine the violet?

Violet has to do with the structure of the feathers. Violet gives the rump, and sometimes the whole body, a purple-ish hue. The rump is the most effected and you can see the violet there. Also, under the wings, you can see the shimmer and it usually means the bird has a violet factor. You can see an article about it here:

O.K. I can see the violet on the rump. Thanks for your help! Is the yellow one an American Yellow or American Cinnamon?

Neither. It is a Splitcinnamino but it is basically an Australian Cinnamon. Splitcinnaminos look just like Australian Cinnamons but they are really split to Australian Cinnamon and Lutino.

You're welcome! I love doing things with genetics and after predicting what colors I can get with breeding and then actually getting them, it's so much fun! Now if it were only possible to predict what colors the babies will be by looking at the egg, or I was able to create the colors the parents will have in their next clutch by giving them something!

I totally agree! I just wish that I was better about determining the correct terminology for all the different color mutations! There are soooo many!
