new to group and need help

Postby carriebetz on Wed Jul 04, 2007 10:14 am

Hi, my name is Carrie and I have just joined. I have a question about my baby birds. My oldest was 6 weeks yesterday and I have 4 of them. I was wondering how you can tell when they are completely weaned and about what age that would be.
Thanks

Baby Lovebirds normally wean between 6 and 9 weeks or so. Mine usually wean at 7 weeks. What I do is offer the formula 4 times a day (every 6 hours) and I keep offering it until they refuse it. If they refuse an afternoon feed a few days in a row, I will stop offering it. I do the same for every feeding but you have to make sure they are eating solids and drinking water before you stop all together. Even after they refuse the last feeding, I will offer them food the next day just to make sure. Sometimes they will refuse all food one day and the next day realize they wanted it and eat one feeding.

    Carrie,
Are we talking about hand feeding babies or babies that the parents are raising? There's a difference.

I am talking about babies that the mom is feeding. I no longer have the dad because he got out and my cat got him  . That is another problem I have I am wondering whether I will be able to get her another mate or if she will even except one or not.

If you want to get her a new mate, make sure you practice safe quarantine procedures and then place the cages side by side. My female accepted a new male soon after her mate died. It all depends on the female though.

Your hen should wean the babies and if you don't plan on handfeeding them, which at this time would be very hard, you just have to let things go how they go.

What you can go for her though since her mate is gone, is offer her more soft foods so it is easy for her to feed her babies. Give her spinach and broccoli, just a little steamed, and some baby food.
