Icky Bird?

Postby sherbibird on Thu Apr 12, 2007 2:48 pm

Hi everyone, I'm new to this website. We just bought a 1 yr old lovebird less than a week ago from a breeder that supposed to have a good reputation. We were so excited to get our lovie that we stupidly didn't really check her over. She's supposed to be hand fed, but is so fearful of us that anytime we just look at her she seems to freak out! Could be we just need to allow time for her to adjust?? I noticed that the middle toe on one of her feet seems to be missing a claw (maybe caught in something and broke off??). Is this normal or a bad sign?? Also, she seems to have a small mark on the top of her head that almost looks like a scar from a cut. (appears that the feathers are missing from that area) I've taken some pics of her, just haven't had time to download them yet. Sorry for the long post, I'm just really worried about my little Sherbibird! :)

I did ask the breeder about the mark on her head and she told us that it's normal in the type of lovie we have. I've searched all over the net and I'm unable to find any information on this.
    Thanks everyone!

The mark on her head is not normal for any type of lovie! Some may lose feathering during breeding or plucking but most youngsters are nicely feathered. I would be most interested in seeing photos, as I'm not so sure you just didn't get fed a line of BS!

Claws are sometimes lost as a result of a bite from another bird. The nail may or may not grow back, depending on the severity of the injury. It should not affect perching ability, however.
