I got eggs...

Postby brimonster on Thu Mar 29, 2007 9:22 am

I've got fertile eggs! This is so exciting considering I thought they were both boys and I was going to get them DNA sexed in a little while. These guys bonded when they were 12 weeks old and have been together ever since. I was told the dark factored was a boy from the breeder. As they started to get older, the cinnamon was displaying male traits (mating displays, mounting my older female, etc.). So I naturally assumed they were both male. When the lighter one started mounting the dark one, I just said, "buddy, you're barking up the wrong tree." A couple of weeks later and I decide to check the nest box they have, since the dark one had been spending a lot of time in there. Lo and Behold! Eggs! I have been watching their progress now for about 2 weeks. All three are fertile and I expect babies here in about a week. Funny thing is that I thought these guys were also too young to breed. They both hatched July of 06. Sneaky buggers!

I think the babies will be dutch blue, dark factor, inos and possily cinnamon. The male is called a Medium seagreen series Austalian Cinnamon Violet, lol, what a tongue twister! He is split to ino and possibly blue.
The female was given to me as a Seasplit DF Violet and I was told split to ino and violet pied but since it is a female, I don't think it is split to ino.
I should have some really pretty babies soon!

Which lovebird is sitting on the eggs? It will make a huge difference in what you will find when the babies hatch!

The male is the Medium Seagreen Series Australian Cinnamon Violet. The female is the Seasplit Darkfactor Violet. The male is split to ino.

One more question. What color are the male's flight feathers? That also will make a difference.

Since the male is a visual cinnamon, as well as being split for ino, any pink eyed chicks or chicks with plum colored eyes will be females. All others will be males. Males will all be split for cinnamon, but may or may not inherit the ino gene from dad. You won't know which males received ino and which ones did not without breeding them.

Yeah, I know about the ino and Cinnamon genes pretty well. Those are the ones I specialize in at my Aviary. The male has greyish flights. He is violet factored too.

As far as the Dutch Blue, that's just a guess as I know someone else with the same pairing and they get Dutch Blues. I know I will have violets, but I'm just hoping there will be Dutch Blues, or Seagreens.

All babies that have the same coloring as mom will be males. If they are ino or cinnamon, they will be females. It makes sexing very easy. Now if the female were the cinnamon, you would not get visual cinnamons at all. All males would inherit the gene but no babies would show the coloring.

The first baby hatced today!! I'm so excited! So far, these first time parents are doing great. The baby is a dark eyed blue series so I guess it could be a dutch blue, seagreen (if these guys can have those babies), SDF violet (like mommy), or Australian cinnamon (like daddy).
Egg #2 and #3 are starting to hatch as well.

Congrats on baby#1! Cinnamon babies will have darker eyes but they are not black. The only way to describe them is plum colored, kind of halfway between black and pink.

Violet chicks seem to have more fuzzy down than non-violet so that may also give you some early clues.

yeah, it will be violet for sure..I think. It has the longest fuzz! My other cinnamons (I believe) had dark eyes. It so hard to tell when they still have the skin closed over them.

Number 2 hatched last night. It's a creamino! I thought the male was split to ino, then I thought about it and realized that he might not be. Turns out my intuition was true and he is! Baby #3 is due to hatch tonight or tomorrow morning. Hopefully it's another blue series! (this is me with my fingers crossed)

Yay! Last baby hatched and it's a blue series again! I was so worried with these parents since it is their first time and I thought they were too young. They are both handraised too. They are doing great though. Mommy is very protective, which makes me happy and the babies are getting fed. (well, that last one won't be fed until tonight or tomorrow morning, but the others are). So I got all blue series babies, which is great. I just love them! Now is the waiting game until they start to feather out!
