I currently breed Abyssinian Lovebirds but I've bred Black Cheeked in the past. What kind of information do you need?

    Hi!
    Thanks for answering.
How hard are they to breed? What type of nestbox and bedding did you use?
My sister just did a trade for a Fischer pair but she got a Black Cheeked hen in the trade also. I have Peachface, Black Masked, and Fischer, but have never had the Black Cheeked.
I am going to attach a picture, can you tell me if you think she is a pure Black Cheeked from the picture? I had heard that since they are hard to get they are often breed with peachface or other kinds of lovebirds.
Do you have any idea were I could get ahold of a male?
    Thank you!

    That looks like a hybrid...a Peachface/Eyering hybrid...

That is what I am afraid of. :? Should I just tame her down and find her a pet home? I 'think' she is tamable...

Yeah, I had to check to make sure, She is a hybrid since her beak is not red. She is a cutie though. I would definately tame her and find her a good pet home, or just a home that will not breed her, as I believe the hybrids cannot breed, but if they did, those babies would be a little confused. I have heard it is confusing for a hybrid to build a nest as they do not know how to build it (since eye-ring and PF lovebirds build nests very differently).

I agree that bird is a hybrid. What a shame. I have a colony of black cheeks. Green, blue, and violet. I was going to attach a picture of what a true black cheek should look like, but I don't see anywhere to post a picture with my reply. If you want to email me @ Glimmer Flights@aol.com I'd be more than happy to share.

I too agree with the bird being a cross between a peach face and a black mask. Allthough theylook cute and make great pets they should not be allowed to breed for pedigree reasons. I see way to many hybreeds here in miami florida. Its getting harder and harder to find pure stock. If you want you can see my flock here. I have two pairs of blackcheeks that you can compare the pictures to. http://www.wildlifecontrolservice.com/lovebirds.htm

Black Cheeks are a bit harder to breed than Peachface, Mask or Fischer's lovebirds. They have a higher humidity requirement. They are native to the Victoria Falls area in Africa where the humidity is always high. I used parakeet sized boxes and let them make their own nests using clean palm fronds.

The bird in the photo is a hybrid.
