There was one odd thing, and that is for the past few weeks, it had been laying egg after egg, a total of about 8 in the last 3 weeks, approx...

It's so sad that your wee girl is gone, Steve. I'm sorry. Excessive egg laying kills much too often by depleting the calcium the bird needs to live.

My condolences, Paca

So sorry

Postby Diego's Mom, Lisa on Mon Dec 11, 2006 3:54 pm

I am so sorry to hear about your lovie. I feel your pain. It is so hard to lose a pal. It really is, we all get so attached to them.

I just took my Petey in to the vet last week because he (or she) is a plucker. His little leggies are bare! He is fine, but while I was there, I asked my doc about egg laying.

We have 2 and neither have layed eggs in 2 years. Not sure of the sex of either.

My vet told me that sometimes, they don't lay any, sometimes they lay them, but only have years. You just don't know when it will happen, if at all. Don't know the explanation for the death, but I guess egg laying is very unpredictable.

I hope someone can help you out with an answer. I have 2 lovies and 1 cockatiel and none have layed eggs to this point.

I might even find a vet and talk to them. My vet is amazing. She is always willing to call me back if I have questions. She really takes her time with my birds.

Once again, so sorry. It is not easy!

I look at Quakers all the time, but I will not buy one because they would not be Bosco. Your little bird will be in your heart forever, You did nothing wrong. Remember Them

Postby Diego's Mom, Lisa on Tue Dec 12, 2006 10:38 am

I know what you mean that they are like your kids. I don't have children myself, so all my pets have always been my babies. *** And even people with kids think of their pets as their babies!! :-)

I have a frame on my entertainment center with 3 pictures. One of me with Diego, one of my husband with Diego, and one of my step-son with Diego. We bought a pretty worry stone and placed it in front of the frame. A little memorial to our Baby D. She is gone, but will NEVER EVER be forgotten!

Steve: I am sorry I can not answer the egg question. I have been Lucky with my 4 girls (NO EGGS) But my Congo was frighten by a hawk in Sept. she has been sleeping in a 18"x18" cage she is getting better during the day. Last night she shredded the paper and made herself a nest. I wonder what her next step will be. I am sure there will be others that have had egg problems that will answer your questions there are many HELPFUL, Intelligent people that are on UAS Peggy

I adopted a female lovie that was supposedly 5 when I got her. She was an excessive screamer and wanted attention, but not from me, so I ended up getting her a mate. They mated all the time and she laid eggs all the time (but were never fertile because the male had a hard time balancing without any tail feathers). She has since lost her mate but will occasionally lay eggs since my breeders create such a flurry of activity during breeding season. Your female may have decided that it was now or never to lay eggs and just suddenly did it or there may have been little changes that you did not notice but she did (in routine, environment, or feed). It was not your fault and I'm sorry for your loss. Last December, the day before Christmas, we lost our wonderful little lovie Thor to a cat and I have beaten myself up ever since with "what if we never rescued that cat?" and "What if we had brought him to the vet sooner?" But accidents happen and in your case, there were no signs to tell you. Just remember that whereever she is now, she is happy and looking down on you with love.

This may sound bad, but you are lucky you have got the chance to bury your friend. Unfortunately, last December (like I had said) I lost a good feathered friend but since up here in the northland the ground was frozen and I couldn't bury him. We also don't plan on staying in this house so I don't want to bury him and leave him (and God forbid I dig him up when we move...) so he is still waiting for a proper burial. It pains my heart everytime I think about it and I just can't decide if I should bury him at a relative's more permanent residence so he can at last have peace.
I'm sorry if I brought anyone down, I just get so sad when I hear about a death of a feathered friend.

unfortunately he is in the freezer, in a paper bag and then a plastic one. It's sad to see the bag and know it is him everytime I open the freezer but I just can't bear to put him somewhere and leave him. In the spring I will bury him at my boyfriend's parents' house where he will be forever remembered.

Luckily, living in Vegas, we don't have that problem. I have had to bury 2 hamsters and my tiel, Diego, in my yard. We do put them in the freezer also if we can't do it right away. I know the feeling of seeing that box in there. It is painful. I wish you luck. But it will be wonderful once you lay your friend to rest and have a peaceful spot to remember him forever!!!

Well, honestly, he has been in the for a year (today actually). I have been able to deal with it that long, I can deal for another few months. I would have buried him sooner (like in the summer) but I just didn't know where to do it. Now that I have settled on a place, I will do it when the ground thaws. Thank you all for your kindness.
