TROUBLE FLYING

Postby whitleyboo on Sat Jun 05, 2010 8:49 am

Last night when I left my female lovebird out to fly around I noticed that she was having trouble flying very far. She is not clipped and always flys around the house when she is out. I noticed that she could fly upwards, but was having trouble flying forward. She could only fly forward a few feet. This is really scaring me. She acts and looks fine in every other way and has had no accidents. Does anyone know what could be causing this or heard of this happening before? We had a severe storm last night while she was out...could there be some connection? Her mate is fine. He was flying around as usual.

I would appreciate any help you can give. Thank you.

Yvonne

Has she lost any flight feathers? Any possible way she could have been injured?

If you are concerned, take her to an a-vet.

Thanks for your reply. It looks like all of her feathers are there. I don't really know what to look for though. I did not see her have an accident, unless it happened when I was not looking. I do intend to take her to the vet. I am hoping that it is nothing neurological.

A couple of missing flight feathers really should not have this kind of impact unless she's lost more than just a few. If you pick her up, spread each wing separately and look for spaces between the feathers where feathers should be, if you know what I'm saying. Lovebirds are generally strong fliers and it normally takes more than just a couple of randomly missing feathers to slow them down.

I would definitely make an appointment with your avian vet to have this checked. She could have injured a wing muscle or there may be some other kind of damage to the wings that is not visible to you.
