Molting Lovebird

Postby Christine on Thu Feb 04, 2010 2:28 pm

Hello!

I have two questions that may seem trivial, but I'm not sure what the answers are. Sawyer is molting like a madman and growing a TON of new feathers. What can I do to help him. He seems a bit irritated and he has a ton of pinfeathers. Also, when birds sit and chew...like, right before he falls asleep, he just sits...and chews. What is he chewing on?

Thanks!
Thanks,
Christine and Sawyer

Bathes. Lots of em. You can even mix some aloe vera juice in with the water, but not every time you give him a bath... be it a spray bottle, a dish of some sort, or otherwise.

Beak grinding. It's not chewing. Some people liken it to teath grinding, however it's just a way for parrots to relax while at the same time keeping their beak in shape. Beaks continually grow like our nails do, and without proper grinding and chewing, their beaks can overgrow. (I think the same can be said for the teeth of a rat?)

You're definitely right! Sawyer is in the sink every day for a bath. He can't get enough! And thanks for the insight. I always wondered!
Thanks,
Christine and Sawyer
