Postby greenguykyle on Fri Dec 04, 2009 2:01 pm

He or she is only 8 months old, hand raised. When she is out she is totaly nice. will sit on your finger, eat out of your hand, play, whaever.
However getting her out of the cage she nips and very hard. I say No lound to no effect. But once out that goes away. Anyideas would be really appreciated.

Many birds, particularly hens, are protective of their cages. After all, the cage is THEIR home and you are the intruder! There are a couple of things you can do and it will definitely save you bitten fingers/hands. Open the cage door and let your lovebird come out on its own. Lovebirds are very curious and open cage doors are usually irresistable! Or, instead of asking your lovie to step up onto your hand, try offering a perch or wooden dowel instead. Use the "Up" command so your let your bird know what you expect.

I have a male, but he gets very territorial over certain things... I'd just open the cage and she'll come out on her own quickly. Then you can get her to step up, or as Sawyer knows it "up up." When Sawyer gets snippy, I say no and then put him back in the cage for a while to let him calm down. This usually works. Good luck with your new lovebird! They are great!
    Thanks,
    Christine and Sawyer

I just checked online at amazon.com because I have a biting issue with my almost 4 month old lovie Olive biting my fingers during playtime. He's more then willing to come out of the cage so I don't have issues with that. But try Butter Apple. It may be akward to put it on your fingers when playing with your bird but after afew times of getting that taste when nipping they may not want to anymore....Some people say it works some people say it doesn't. Never tried it myself but am still thinking about and need to research it some more. But it doesn't hurt to try... :D
