Baby regirgitates after handfeeding

Postby bigmike0601 on Thu Jul 02, 2009 7:00 am

Hello,

1st clutch from our 1.5 year old breeders hatched out 1 of 5 eggs. We pulled the baby at 3 weeks and started hand feeding. Baby gives good responses and takes the food in. About 50% of the time the baby throws up about 1/2 to 3/4 of the food. We are feeding the baby 3 times a day. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Mike

How much formula are you feeding each time? There are two possibilities. First is that you are overfeeding. I max out at 8 cc (ml)/feeding. I feed a bit less and will feed more often but it's easier to wean the baby at the end because the crop isn't overstretched.

Second possibility is a crop infection. If that's the problem, you will need to get this baby to your avian vet ASAP. Crop infections can be fatal, as they don't get better without medication.
