Took me a minute to recreate the problem but I found it. Looks like you're not joining a channel first. Try typing this:

/join #upatsix

Later, you can /join different channels (i.e. one that you make up or one that you find to be interesting).

By default, you're not put into any channels, you're just logged into the system and in the 'server window'. Try the /join command and that should get you going.

Later this week I'll make a post on the basic IRC commands.
