How to get connected to IRC

Postby damian on Wed Jun 11, 2008 3:32 am

IRC stands for Internet Relay Chat. It's a place where you can talk to your friends or make real ones in "real time". It's a very nice system where you can easily chat with others who have the same interests as you. You can either join a pre-existing channel or make your very own room where you control who can enter and what goes on.

Getting connected:
There are a number of commercial and freeware IRC clients out there. Some popular ones are:
  • mIRC ( Commercial but very intuitive and powerful )
  • ChatZilla ( Windows, Linux, MacOS - Free. Standalone or a plug in for FireFox or SeaMonkey )
  • HydraIRC ( Windows - Free )
  • X-Chat ( Windows, Linux - Free )
  • X-Chat Aqua ( Mac OS - Free )

If you have the extra cash, mIRC is well worth the $20 but I went with ChatZilla myself as it was free, easy to use and integrated with my browser ( FireFox ).

Connection information for the IRC Server: ( irc://irc.upatsix.com:1488 )
server: irc.upatsix.com
port: 1488
channels: #upatsix and #help are created by default but you have the ability to make any channel you wish. See the services available below which can help you setup and maintain your own public and or private chat rooms. You'll find the robot I'm working on here, UASBot which integrates with the Up At Six Wiki among other things.

Services Available:
  • MemoServ - Message server. Use this robot to send messages to your friends and channel members when they're offline. For more information type /msg MemoServ HELP
  • NickServ - Use this robot to register and protect your own unique nickname on IRC. For more information type /msg NickServ HELP
  • ChanServ - The channel server can be used to register and protect your own unique channel(s). For more information type /msg ChanServ HELP

Pre-defined Robots available:
  • Polly
  • SystemBot
  • GameBot
These robots can be added to your channel upon request to help keep your topic, help handle your regular users and provide services such as keeping your channel clean (bad words filter). GameBot has a few games that you can play either solo or with your channel (Quizzes, Trivia, Dice, etc).

The Up At Six IRC server is not linked in any other network for the same reason it's running on an 'off port'. It's just because I'd like to keep it animal, if not aviculture only. However, if you are a system administrator that would like to link up servers and are like-minded on keeping an animal/aviculture only IRC server, let me know. I'd be willing to cross link the servers and balance the load.

Another feature is that you are allowed to run your own robots on your channels but I do request that you just send me a notification email so I'm aware of it. The server is dedicated and on a very fast link so it's able to handle quite a bit of traffic/load.

I hope to see some of you on there. Also, if you're interested, I could always use a few operators to help out in case trolls ever show up. If you're interested in that aspect, just send me a PM.

Enjoy the system,

Damian
The key to happiness is to avoid ever putting salt in your eye. Not matter how tempted and curious you may be, consider it unwise. Those who are still willing to attempt such a feat should at the very least have a video recording system handy so others may benefit by watching your mistake take place...
