Hi Everyone, It has been a couple of years since I have been at Up At Six. At that time I was owned by a cockatiel hen. There use to be some pretty heated dicussions on here. My hen has since passed over the rainbow bridge & I am looking for a canary, budgie, or keet. I don't really know which direction to go. I have come here to get some advice. I miss my hen & really need to have another bird in my life. I am getting up in age so know that the 3 above birds that I am researching will fit into my life nicely. Even a rescue bird would be fine & knowing if there are any rescues in my area would help. Thanks, Fly

Welcome back to Up At Six! Since you are looking for a smaller bird, I would think you should have no troubles finding one in a rescue or humane society reasonably close to you. You could try Petfinder, which allows you to do a search for birds that will list them in order by closest to your zip code. I check fairly regularly. I see lots of budgies, cockatiels, and some finches. Sadly, these little birds seem to have become very disposable. I've also notice many on Craigslist. Your location is not on your profile so I couldn't really tell you if there are any other bird rescues in your area. Good luck!

Petdiva, I could not figure out the profile thing? It will take me awhile they keep changing things on these boards & I am an old timer from the 1940's. LOL! Anyhow I live in the 52101 mail zone. I did find a person in Muscatine, Iowa. He had a mated pair of tiels. I prefer keets( maybe a pair) of males or a male canary. I would like to look for someone in the southeastern Minnesota too. Thanks for the welcome. :D Fly

Okay, it took me a little bit to figure out because I entered my location when I set up my profile.

To add your location (state) to your profile:
When logged in, click on User Control Panel. (at top right)
    Click on the Profile tab.
Scroll down to Location (in red on my screen), and you can click down on the box to the right to pick your state.

The only rescue I know of in Iowa is the Iowa Parrot Rescue (http://mikeoso.homestead.com/rescue.html). You should also be able to find lots of budgies and maybe a canary or finch on Petfinder (http://www.petfinder.org/).

Petdiva, Thank you for the instructions & it works. I had checked out the fella in Iowa & he lives a good three hours southeast of here. I will check out Southeast Minnesota & Wisconsin. I know it will take sometime to find the right bird that is in need of a human slave. I was thinking today when I came back from a walk with my dogs that my sweet bird was always excited to see me & would whistle when she heard me open the door & come into the house. I miss that & I miss her. :(
