Hooded Parrots

Postby Patti In Oz on Tue Dec 09, 2008 9:28 pm

I've wanted a pair of Hoodeds for quite some time, but they are a bit pricey. I just found a pair for sale at a very reasonable price and am seriously considering buying them. They aren't widely kept here even though they are native to Aus, so info on their breeding is a bit lacking. Does anyone have any experience with them? Any info at all would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

    Patty,

Since you're in Australia, you should get the book Australian Parrots, #2 From Mr Sindel and Gill. It has great info on the Psephotus species. I sell the book, but am in the US. I believe the Australian Birdkeeper sells it out your way.

My Hoodeds are in a flight, fed seed and lots of fruits and vegetables, and lay 3-4 eggs, incubate themselves, and usually raise 1-3 babies per clutch. In all the years they've bred, they never produced a hen, which is common for Hoodeds in the US.

I don't know if yours will incubate, as incubation is done in the termite mounds in Australia, so you need to ask some breeders where you are at. They are easy to keep and breed well for me.

    Good Luck.

Thanks Anne-Marie. Unfortuntely the bloke who had this pair for sale kept stuffing me around so I got fed up and spent the money on another species on my wish list. A proven pair of split to cinnamon Eastern Rosellas. I will be getting a pair of Hoodeds at some point. But the guy was starting to come across as a bit dodgey. I've read that they often leave the nest at night. Have you had that problem with yours?
