New parakeet owner

Postby rradrobyn on Wed May 09, 2007 5:05 pm

I have talked in the 'tiel chat room a number of times. I just inherited, was given, a blue-feathered parakeet. She's approximately 5-6 yrs. old, and likes to lay eggs. She's a bitter too, but I took her hoping I could make a difference. The thing is, how long do I let her keep her eggs? She apparantely had 3 the other day, and she ate 2 of them. She's down to one. She's getting calcium through a bar/toy/thing on the side of her cage. They were also FEEDING her gravel, on top of her food (Heartz). So, my plan is to switch her to Zupreem if they make a 'keet food, and I took away the gravel out of her dish. Can you believe that? HELP!

    What kind of parakeet?

As for eggs, if you completely rearrange the cage, it may be possible to remove the eggs as soon as she lays them... however if she's laying more than 2-3 eggs then it'd be best to let her keep them (i.e. save the eggs you take away just incase you need to put them back)... and make sure she has no comfortable place to lay.
