How to send a private message

Postby damian on Fri Jul 25, 2008 5:56 pm

A board with many features can be a bit intimidating to those who aren't computer savvy and though some may think it's a trivial task to send a private message, others do not so I wanted to give this a once over...

We recommend to all users that they never publish their email address or phone number in their posts for the main reason that spammers, no matter how hard we try, will frequent the forums trolling for new targets to spam. Instead of posting your email address or contact information in your post or advertisement, we instead recommend using the in board email and private message system. This allows registered users to contact you without your information being out in the open. Here's how it works...

1) You make a post in a forum
2) A registered user wishes to contact you
3) He or she would look for the contact options as shown here:

You'll notice that damian has 4 ways to be contacted - Private Message (PM), Email, his website and finally Jabber (Instant messaging similar to MSN or AIM)

We'll select PM which will bring us to the Compose message screen:

As you can see, it looks very similar to the make a new post window so most of the options you see should be self explanatory. By default, the message you were just reading is quoted, this makes keeping everyone on the same page much easier. When possible, keep those quotes so everyone involved in the conversation knows what's going on.

Once you've written what you need to say, you simply click the Submit button and off it goes! The person you're writing will either be notified via email that they have a new PM waiting (if they have the correct email address in their profile), notified when they next log in or in some cases, they'll be notified instantly with a pop up window if they've setup their Up At Six Jabber account (also see forum-support/topic92657.html for part two of the Up At Six Jabber account setup if interested).

Enjoy the system,

Damian
The key to happiness is to avoid ever putting salt in your eye. Not matter how tempted and curious you may be, consider it unwise. Those who are still willing to attempt such a feat should at the very least have a video recording system handy so others may benefit by watching your mistake take place...
