Society Finch babies

Postby Spin on Wed Feb 04, 2009 7:27 pm

Help! I need some advice. One of my two females laid 4 eggs and then suddenly died. For the last 2 weeks, the 4 males in the cage have been very attentive to the nest and the eggs and today...surprise! One of the eggs has hatched. Here's my question: Since the mother died, will the male birds take care of the babies adequately? The remaining female in the cage has been completely isolated from the nest since the eggs were laid (not sure why) and she shows no interest in the new baby.

I was really shocked that these egg(s) hatched. I've had finches for 3 years and seen lots of eggs but none ever hatched before.

I am inclined to leave them alone and let nature take its course, but I don't want to see the baby(ies) die if there's some action I need to take. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

I think the question is: is the male feeding the babies? if not then you will have to learn to hand feed these babies ASAP.
I do not have experience in hand feeding baby finches (just cockatiels & budgies) but maybe other chatters have ?

Societies are some of the best birds at fostering, they are commonly used to foster other finch species too! Just shoo the dad off of the nest and check the crop of the chick to make sure they are feeding. Handfeeding a finch can be done, but you will not be getting any sleep, it is very time consuming and hard to do, it is nothing like handfeeding a parrot.

As long as they are feeding, there will be no problem with males raising the chicks.

I'm happy to report that, while only 1 chick hatched, the 4 males are doing an awesome job of feeding it. :D He's growing like a little weed and we even heard him fussing the other day, demanding more food. Since he's the only one, he's getting all of the food and all of the attention.

    Thanks for the input.
