Hi I have a male Canary who is molting and not singing.
One week ago my Robin had his leg with the band stuck on the cage bar.
Robin had his leg amputated it was dead and hanging. Do alot of people have this problem with canaries?
Do you think the breeder is allowed to do it or should the vet ?
Robin is named after my fav singer Robin Gibb from the Bee Gees. 8)

I would always have a vet do any major work, this includes amputation. Pain medication and antibiotics will be needed.

A vet should do an amputation for the reasons christie mentioned but also because where they do the amputation depends on where the break is. Birds can die just from the procedure or the stump can be painful if amputation is not done correctly.


I think all open bands should be removed and if you want to leave closed bands on your birds, make sure the cage and toys are safe and have nothing that can snag on a legband.

I breed canaries and never had any trouble with bands getting stuck on the cage bar. A vet should be seen in the case of a leg being so bad. How far apart is your bars on your cage?
