New Gouldians

Postby christie on Mon Dec 17, 2007 11:39 pm

I just had to brag a little. I was lucky enough to get a great deal on two new finches this weekend. One double factor red head male, and one dilute orange head male. :)

The new boys. The Orange Head bird is a Dilute. That means one parent was YELLOW and with all the genetics I've worked out that also means that he will have some yellow chicks in each clutch.

The Red Head in the back is a big boy and very active. No suprises that I know of in his genetics.

Here you can see the color difference in their backs.

Yes, they do have long beaks and they did have long nails. They were in a large aviary situation so they didn't get the TLC that a small bird situation gets.

I trimmed nails today and very carefully trimmed Orange Boy's beak. Red Boy got a quick file since his wasn't as long. Everything will correct itself now that they will get more individual attention. The aviary they came from was at least well kept and clean. Just hard to keep track of 100+ finches!! They even had some blue gouldians, maybe those will be next in the breeding population here.

Yes, just in case you are wondering, they are in quarantine. :)

    Thank you!

The boys are now out of quarantine and in love with the girls. They spend their day at the side of their cage singing their little hearts out.
