This is not working...

Postby Mercy4Free on Tue Dec 11, 2007 10:32 pm

Okay....I have two female finches. When I used to have a little hanging basket, just big enough for the two of them to sleep in, they laid their first eggs. I was told to take the basket away to discourage the egg laying.....WRONG. For a while they would just drop the eggs and they would break at the bottom of the cage. Now, one is laying them in the FOOD DISH which is not only not very clean but I think keeping the other one from eating as much (though they are fine so maybe not). Also I keep throwing the eggs away with the food so she keeps laying. Two in one night....unless each laid an egg. I can't figure out which one is laying.

Anyway....I am thinking of putting the basket back for these two reasons:
1. At least she'd have a place to lay the eggs so she can sit on them (I won't throw them away so quickly which enocurages more egg laying) and stop laying so constantly. I just figure if she is going to lay she needs a place she can lay and get whatever she gets from sitting on them.
2. It's starting to get cool (I live in Florida) so they can have the extra warmth of sleeping in the basket and sleeping against each other.

Thoughts or other solutions?

Finches lay 1 egg every day... therefore, both are probably laying... you should probably allow them to lay their eggs and leave them be... and hopefully, once they get bored of them, remove the nest and eggs... also, try changing out the types of dishes. You may also have to completely rearrange the cage, move it to a new location, and reduce their amount of daylight hours.

You do not want them to be continually laying eggs as this depletes their body of calcium.

Pretty much my point exactly except I an't leave the eggs in the food dish. Usually I only find one, but one day there was two. Well......

if you give them a nest they will lay and probably stop laying for a while, so i think the nest is a good idea

I agree. Put the nest back in and let them lay and brood the eggs. When they abandon the nest you can toss the eggs. Of course, if these are Zebras they may not abandon the nest but instead lay another clutch on top of the old one. Are you providing nest building material?

It seems to have helped matters....I will have to take them out in a few days to soak that basket clean though.
