Refresh My Memory

Postby LttlFeathers on Thu Aug 16, 2007 4:41 pm

I have a pair of Society Finches. Isn't the male the only one to sing?? I watched him in the cage and waited for him to sing. I was told that the "female" had laid eggs, and "she" was sitiing on bottom of the cage like she was going to lay. But, this afternoon, they were both just singing away! LOL

They both can do a little sing/chirp but the male does the distinctive 'up and down' dance while he sings.

Often, with two males, the submissive one will sit on the bottom of the cage. Unless you saw chicks, or know the person well and believe them, then you could have 2 males.

LOL They've been preening each other. I'll watch closer tomorrow to see the "hen" puffs out its chest like the male does. MY male tries to mount it. There were like about 6-7 of them in a cage. They were in with Spices and 1 Orange Cheek Waxbill.

Does anyone know how to sex Spice Finches? A friend has 3 and so far, nothing. I never did do Spices.

sexing societies

Postby alhee on Fri Aug 17, 2007 1:26 pm

They need to be at least 4 months old. Separate the one that you think is a hen, in a "comfortable" cage, for at least 1 full day. Then introduce a known bachelor male. If the first bird is a male, it will immediately start singing. If the first bird is a mature female, it will pair off with the new male, and allow..."you know what...
I couldn't identify the hens till about 6 months, and they didn't lay till about 10 months.

...oops. sorry. I was talking about societies. However, I suspect that many of the spices now are really "spicieties" hybrids, and they might behave the same way. I have no clue about my wild-caught spice, which is almost a year old, but I suspect that it is a "she".
I did notice that my silverbill males will sit alone and sing. They are more solitary than my societies. I have also noticed that the wild Javas in my area mostly sing when they are alone, in pairs, and mating.
My few birds are in my study, where I can kick back, do paperwork, and enjoy them.
