Painting a cage

Postby Mercy4Free on Sat Aug 11, 2007 2:35 pm

When I moved into my house, there was a cage in the back that looked like it was used for a rodent or something. However, I think it will make a great finch cage as it is long. The only problem is it needs painting........can I spray paint the cage? or not? of course I would clean it really well first because I don't know what it was used for. It even has little ladders and things in it.

Hmmm, thought I answered this last night but somehow lost the post!
Anyway, since the cage will be used by finches, you should be safe to paint and reuse it.

Clean it well, use Rustoleum (for metal) primer, followed by their spray enamel paint. Let dry and air for about a week and you should be fine.

The same does not apply for hookbills. They have the tendancy to chew on the cage and ingest the paint, which does have zinc in it. The safest thing to do for the hookbills is to have the cage professionally powder coated.
