Bronze Wing Mannikins

Postby 6EFarm on Wed Jun 06, 2007 1:01 pm

Hello everyone!
I'm not new to finches, but my husband bought me two little Bronze Wing Mannikins. I believe they are a pair as one is always singing and the other doesn't. I have them in a good size cage by themselves with a nest and all the finch goodies, but they don't seem the least bit interested in breeding or even checking out the nest.
Soo, if they are an actual pair, how can I encourage them to breed? Anything special these little Mannikins enjoy?
Thank you. :)

Hello!
BWM are usually great parents and probably just need time to adjust to their new environment. With a good diet, some nesting material and an enclosed nest they'll probably start laying before long. They may also be young so allow time for them to mature if that's the case.

Mine enjoyed a mix of finch seed along with a canary mix, veges, cooked rice and mealworms.

Do you know if they're unrelated?

Thank you for the advice.
No, I don't know if they're unrelated. Hmmm.....guess I better enquire of husband on that.

Thank you! :)

I've bred these over the years in England, not hard if you have a true pair.It depends how you keep them.
When you say you have them in a cage....what type? is it all wire?Is it in the house or somewhere quiet.?
They like their privacy, if it's an all wire cage give them an open fronted finch nestbox in a corner surrounded with fir branches or artificial foliage so they feel secure.Plenty of nesting material (they like coconut fibre or similar)
The male has a cute song hasn't he?
Good luck,and give 'em time.
Paul.
