sick bird

Postby merry on Fri May 04, 2007 9:05 am

my canary has too much urine in his droppings, or has diarrhea, I can't tell which, droppings watery, lots of white, solid material looks mushy. he's sitting fluffed up on his water dish, kind of panting. he's been okay, maybe off his feed for just a day. what to do?

If you can't get it to a vet, hang a heating pad on the side of the cage, turn it on to medium and cover the top and 3 sides of the cage with towels. To heat the area up quickly put hot water in a jar (with lid) in the corner of the cage and remove it once the area warms from the heating pad.

Are you sure this is a male? It could be a hen that is egg bound. He/she's definitely sick and he probably hasn't eaten well for more than one day. They often play in their food when they're ill, and only appear to be eating. Labored breathing is not a good sign.

It's really time for a visit to the vet, ASAP
