New Rescue Finches

Postby Qwyl on Sun Apr 18, 2010 1:29 pm

Last night I became the unexpected new mom to 2 zebra finches. Im assuming a male and female based on pictures I found online. I grew up with canarys, so Im familiar with care and feeding etc, but I havent had birds in over 20 years. I have no idea how old these birds are, or their state of health. Their eyes are clear, feathers nice, seem to be energetic and chatty, so I think they are fine. The cage is disgustingly dirty, so that is job one.

Any tips to get me started? I've been reading old threads to familarise myself. I see that I should probably take their nest out? They did sleep in it last night, and seem to like it so I dont want to take it out if I dont have to. I DONT want babys, but maybe these two are too old to reproduce? Any way to tell?

Birds can reproduce throughout their lives, so yes, take the nest out.

You will want to make sure you have a large cage for them, most finch cages are too small. Get them on a good diet, offer fresh foods, and cuttlebone.

Thankyou for the reply. I just finished cleaning and rearranging everything. They seem to have such solid temperments. Not easily frightened, bounce back quickly from anything that startles them. The cage is spic'n span. I took the nest out  but arranged a rope perch, a regular perch and some hanging silk ivy in the corner where it was so I hope they will be fine. I hung a grapevine hoop on one wall and a spray of millet from a swing. I cant tell what kind of seed theyve been eating, looks like kibbles n bits   so Im gradually mixing their new finch food with it for a few days and then toss the old stuff.

I've offered them lettuce and a bit of banana, but they wouldnt go near it. Next shopping trip I'll pick up some carrots and apple to, and gardening season is just beginning so there will be other fresh goodies available.

I just remembered I have an old cat domain stored in the garage. I think on days that I know I'll be home all day, I'll bring them out in the living room and set the cage inside it to protect them from the curious beasts. I have several dogs and cats who want to know what the heck is going on here!! The room they are in doesnt get a whole lot of use and I have to make a special effort to spend time in there.

They won't be into the fruits as much, but leafy greens are usually a hit. I take large pieces, get them wet, and hang them from the top of the cage. This provides some bathing and play as well as something good to eat. :)
