baby chick getting pecked on head..

Postby granymontana on Mon Mar 01, 2010 6:03 pm

Babies are now 7, 8, an 9 days old... chicks # 1 an 2 are doing fine..
My concern now is for the youngest one. lagging behind alot as of today.. has a tiny spot of dried blood on the back of it's head...
my question is ... which parent an why...

can I hand feed an put back in nest ..

this nest is cotton an nesting string... bad choice... the left over string has already been dumped... the learning process... yikes..

If you can catch which parent is pecking at the chick, then remove that parent to another cage. The remaining one will do the rest of the feeding.

It is VERY hard to handfeed a canary or finch, like I have told you before and you will more than likely kill it by feeding too much, too hot or cold, or just not enough. Let the parents do the work as long as they are feeding. Go to the lady gouldian finch site I told you about and look in the breeding section, there is a how to handfeed book there that explains exactly what you will need to do if you choose to handfeed, and how many chicks the person that figured out the schedule and process accidentally killed through her good intentions.

Thank you Christie... I am leaning more on the male... since I have actually caught him working aggressively taking off the leg bands..

Zjohn Claude had finished eating alot... went to the nest to feed.. they just lay still.. .. the min the hen lands on the edge... all three are ready... 1 & 2 are crowding 3 out..

Is there any sure way to sex them while they are still in the raw... ( baby fuzz )

The nest is getting crowded now...when the chicks get active... they can make the hen lift up... an you see there lil beaks popping out along the side..

If you had snagged the shells right after each chick hatched, you could have had DNA done on them to see how many males and females you have. Otherwise, you will have to wait to find out. I'm not sure about sexing canaries, so I don't know if you need to wait for them to sing, or if you should DNA test.

I read your post... an was singing louder than the birds... DNA..............on a bird... ?

Baby 1... 10 days old..... eyes are open ..at times... tries to focus... On the mother.... she flew past the nest... an the baby followed her for a brief second.. the min she came back baby was reared up an head back... it was eat... push bum up to edge of nest for droppings.. does alot of beak movement..

baby 2... eyes have slit...eats well... bum up... for droppings..

baby 3... with pecked head... does get fed... bum up...

Hen fed the babies... then set down.... all was calm... till the male went to feed her... the chicks pushed up so hard... they were
peeping out from under her... alll three babies in row... an me without my camera... she finally had to stand up...

While the parents were out flying this morning... I put the chicks on a towel... took tweezers an pulled out as many ( nesting strings) *bad word* as I could find.. ....

    Another full learning day.....

Yes, you can DNA test a bird. It is usually done with a few drops of blood, or 5-10 plucked breast feathers. There are several labs that do the testing, but again, I don't know about canaries and if this is even necessary.

    11 days old...

i can now hear some tiny sounds coming from the nest..

Baby 1... is making beak chatter..... Ms maude had him stretching up so tall in the nest... that his wings were fluttering

    Baby 2... strong competition...

Baby 3...still the runt.. but does get fed..throat is bright red.. eyes still a slit..

I took baby 3 out an put it on top.... that only lasted till the nest feeding.. when he fell to the bottom..

***Sexing.... one site says if the middle toe is pronounced longer it's a male.......... says also if you lay the chicks on something they can get a grip on... the ones that try to scramble.. are male... if they lay still hen... all three try to scramble... all three have long middle toes.. Does any one know how true that might be...

They both enjoy their flight time out of cage alot more... it's take a bath an go fly... I clean up the mess... an put in treat dish.. tap on it.. here they come...

I have found that old time.. glass crystal ashtrays are perfect.. and very cheap... make sure to check for any nicks..
