hen slow at feeding new chicks

Postby granymontana on Tue Feb 23, 2010 10:03 am

Gosh ... alll 4 chicks are now here... 12 days after they were laid.... babe 1. was getting very lifeless... at 2 day... she was barely feeding... apparent that it was new to her... I held it in my hand an kept nudge it... till it tried to move about... it took 3 chick ..before she started feeding better.... # 4 was this morning ... before light... I put the bath water in there... she went straight to take a big splash.... I was counting from the date last egg was laid.... but they hatched 12 days after being laid...

Male went up to survey... he kept looking... finally got in the nest an jut stood there... frozen.. I could see the chicks moving around... under him.... he did alot of fast chatter.... she came back an got in ... she has not taken her flight since laying the eggs..

I captured one chick on camera with egg still on head it's chick... will name that one egg head..

Many birds do not feed for the first day, and the more you mess with the cage and the nest, the less relaxed she will be. Many first clutches do not make it due to inexpierence of the parents. For the first few days, you will barely be able to see the crop, since it doesn't hold much. As they get bigger, she will feed more. Make sure you have pleanty of soft, easy to eat foods for them to feed. Soaked seeds are great, just make sure you learn how to do it properly first.

Babe' # 4 is now about 12 hr old... she is doing alot better at feeding... she lets me sit an watch as she sits on the edge of nest..
all four raised up just a bit ago... it sure is a scramble.. and a pleasure to be allowed to watch.. I am in Portland Oregon... waiting for the sun to shine so I can take pictures... without flash...

Do the parents eat the shells... have 4 babe's only 2 shells...

My friends stop by... want to see... the very instant they get close... she sits tight... lol...

I noticed... he is not singing at strong pitch... but more like he is singing...low key... back an forth with the hen...
