Mother Canary won't feed-help

Postby marylemon on Sun Jul 19, 2009 11:47 am

I have three four-day old canary babies who are not getting enough to eat. I spoke with an avian vet who told me hand-feeding is too difficult, it is too hard for me to watch them flounder and die. Could anyone help me with hand feeding baby canary chicks??? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Of course, it is not too difficul, and it's been done.
except that they need food constantly,
and the handfeeding formula for parrot-type birds needs
to be supplemented with animal protein, mashed hard-boiled eggs,
and the food needs to be fresh.
Luckily, it's summer, so keeping them warm night not be a problem.

I took the plunge and fed them three times the first day and all are still alive, even the tiny little guy who I think is two days younger. I am only guessing that I am feeding them enough, the mother seems to feed them occasionally and maybe only one chick at a time. Does chirping signify hunger? And I read that you should stop feeding when their crop is full but that too seems hard to judge. I notice their neck is bulging with food but they are still begging so that too has been a difficult to determine. I am terrified of killing them by overfeeding. Thank you for your help with this, it is really been quite an experience. I am just trying to go day by day feeding by feeding because I know they would have been dead by now if they weren't fed.

Determining if the babies have enough food is the hard part,
because they really don't have a crop. You might see a little
swelling of food along the sides of the neck.
They beg for food even when they have enough.
It sounds like you're doing ok !

Thank you- Well, they are now two weeks old and doing well. They won't let me feed them anymore! They won't take the food so I am assuming that they are getting enough from their mother. I will be so relieved when they can feed on their own, it is too much worry!
