Are They Normal???

Postby Patti In Oz on Mon Jan 12, 2009 8:21 pm

I've had my pair of Eclectus for quite some time now and I am just blown away by these two! Coming from a strong background in Lorikeets and Cockatoos I am used to highly strung or needy birds. My Eckys are neither! I have never in my life had the absolute pleasure of such placid, mellow big birds! Even Solomon who needed a bit of retraining is like a big cookie cat now. I have zero fear of being bitten by either and they...especially Miranda....is content with whatever happens. They are content in the cage if I am too busy but they are also content to just sit on the back of the porch swing all day if that's where I am. Miranda is the most pliable bird I have ever met. She loves to wrestle, but also loves a cuddle and will lay on our chests just looking lovingly into our eyes for extended periods of time. They are incredibly quiet too. I know there is another pair about 10 houses down from me because I hear them screech throughout the day. But my two just don't. Is this normal for Eckys?

Also, my two are 7 and 9 months old and have not yet started talking. Miranda makes noises not unlike a human infant but as of yet no words from either. And.....they happily share a large indoor cage. But looking to the future....what sort of space do they need to breed? I would prefer for security that they remain indoor birds, but am not sure that I can manage to give them enough space once they begin thinking about breeding.

    Hi there!

Like you, I have owned many different species of birds, hookbills and passarines alike. Of the larger psittacines, Eclectus parrots are my FAVORITE breed, and their temperment is one of their best features! I am SO HAPPY you have found such joy in this pair! My ekkies do alert, especially Mama and her daughter, but they are very cool, mellow cuddlers all around! I am pleased you are now blessed with the Light of the Eclectus Spirit gracing your home!

    Much love!
