I am waiting on blood tests for Polyoma. He is getting 1.5 mil of Baytril. My birds get lots of Vitamin D from daily walks and also time on our front deck that is really protected and about 10 degrees warmer than the regular outside temp. I have an extra cage out their for them to hang out in/on. They get fresh fruits and veggies from the farmer's market. One vendor there has a huge variety of organic greens (collard, dandelion, japanese spinach, bok choy, sorrel, arugula...) I buy a variety from him every week. They get this mashed into a sweet potato or squash along with ekkie pellets. They also get a bowl of fruit - Teddy's favorites are blood oranges, oranges, papaya, apples and pomegranates when in season. They also get some scrambled egg with washed egg shell, beans or a bit of chicken leg a few times a week……….'

Could you post the weight of your sick Ekkie?

I believe you said that he is getting his meds thru injections. I assume the dose you mentioned is given (1/2 each time = .75ml or cc), twice a day? I heard that Baytril causes tissue necrosis at the site of injection and that it should only be given by injection no more than 2 days in a row and after that put into the hand-feeding formula instead? If you don't mind, when you talk to your vet again, could you specifically ask him about that?

What is the dose of the second antibiotic please?

And once again, if you don't mind, could you ask why he is not giving an anti-fungal at the same time as the Baytril?

Thanks.

To the OP - I'm glad that the birds seem to be doing better. I hope they continue to improve.

F8 - Why is it that you are so interested in the dosages of medications given by avian vets? Why is it that you question what they are giving? Not all birds or people for that matter, need an anti-fungal in addition to an antibiotic. If they are using probiotics or do so shortly after, there is no problem. Sometimes you can be fine even without the probiotics (birds too.)

Teddy passed today. He did not get anti-fungal b/c his initial signs were neurological. The necropsy showed impacted food in his proventriculus (he did not defecate and was unable to pass his food the last two days). His proventriculus was also swollen. Everything else appeared normal. The liver was yellowed from the fats not going through it, but there was no sign of liver disease. I did not have any other work up and was satisfied with the extent of this examination. Our Dr. said little is known of PPD so it is unclear if it is contagious or if all birds are carriers and only those birds with weakened immunity fall prey to it.

We are deeply grieved. I don't like to play favorites, but Teddy was my clear favorite b/c I had set him free by taming him. We had a great bond and he was a very communicative bird. I absolutely adored him. Male ekkies have very charming personalities and I really hope to meet another one some day.

I'm very sorry too  I've lost birds I also adored, so I know what it does to the heart. Healing light around each of you.

I already said why in a preceding post, it might help if you read my other posts.

Anti-fungals are often prescribed along with antibiotics, at least IME. I never said all birds or people need to have anti-fungals prescribed every single time in addition to an antibiotic. Google for specific reasons, no time to explain it right now.
