How many perches

Postby countrymom94 on Mon Aug 11, 2008 5:15 pm

I am getting a male ekkie baby on Wed. We have a large Macaw cage for him so that is good, but how many perches are average for a ekkie? Also do they go all over or do they like to have them higer or lower? My sun likes to be higher. If perches are low he wont even bother. Are ekkie's different. Maybe even pics of your cages so I can get an idea.

Most birds prefer higher spots than lower.... I would suggest a minimum of three perches... more if there is room for it! One natural, one rope, and maybe one sand/concrete (but no more than one of those).

The main idea is to study your bird and how they interact in your cage. Take a few days and move them around watching and observing how the bird gets around and relaxes in their own enviroment. Does it have a perch in the shade? One in the sun? One to get from point a to point b? A good one by the food dishes? One on top? One around their favorite toy?

The postion of the perches depends on the attitude of your bird and nothing else. I would only suggest that the perches are of different diamenters so your bird can grip at different thicknesses. One cement one like mentioned above is also a good choice to help groom their nails and beaks.

You see it's all a matter of how you study your bird and provide for those areas he/she will want to spend their time. I'm always changing the location of the perches in all of my cages. I think they rather renjoy the change, and I am always observing their natural exploration of their enviorment and locate perches to aide them!
