Crying eclectus

Postby sammys dad on Wed Aug 15, 2007 7:52 am

We have had Sammy a SI male since July 13. He is just great and very loving. He was only 3 months old when we brought him home which I fear now was too young. He eats very welll but he seems to be crying when sitting on his birch . He can see us watching tv and we do hold him but he is crying. I am not worried or alarmed but would like to know if I should be.

Thank you,

Rich Tozzo

Weaning is a process that's both physical and emotional. My guess is that your baby has a lingering emotional need for some comforting. Have you spotted wild bird family groups with an almost-grown youngster following a parent 'til he gets fed a little? You might try finger-feeding Sammy a little bit of warm comfort food -- maybe a few pellets or tiny pieces of banana or mango soaked in warm water 5-6 seconds, or small globs of mashed sweet potato.

These developmental stages are usually very fleeting. He just needs reassurance that IF he needs you, you're willing. Once you prove willing, his need will be quickly satisfied. If it happens at the same time each evening (or whenever it's happening), you might anticipate his need and give him a little comfort feeding before he cries. After 3-4 days/nights of this, let him tell you if he needs it again. He probably won't

Frightening, isn't it? They're so totally dependent on us.
