male vs. femail

Postby Orphanannie on Tue Mar 13, 2007 12:22 pm

Hello, my family and I want to add a S.I. eclectus to the family/flock. We found a great breeder local that thought he had two boys, but now that the feathers are coming in better, he realizes he has one boy and one girl. The boy is already spoken for. So we could have the girl:) Anyway...I find them both beautiful, but have heard some "negative" things about the girls as they get older. I would like to hear from some people that own the girls, instead of just some stuff that I have read on the internet. Thanks so much.

Most who own an ekkie usually end up getting one of each sex. They're just as good as one another. Of course the females can be a little bossier & can be harder to handle hormonally but it's something everyone manages to work through quite well. I guess it's a matter of getting to know the bird too. Females are becoming more popular as peoples reactions aren't so over the top about them any more, or perhaps they're better handled now than they used to be so they don't have 1/2 the probs they used to.

It would've been extremely rare to have your breeder have 2 of the same sex. It can happen but as I said it is rare. Ekkies are usually breeders of 2 eggs, 1 female, 1 male.

I say go for it.

Thanks so much and I am going to go for it. She is only 4 weeks old right now, so i have a while to go, but I am going to visit weekly and start collecting toys, stands, and such. I am very excited. I am going to go visit on Thursday. I can't wait. She is only about an hour from my home, so that is nice too.

Thanks again
