looking for information on a breeding pair

Postby swan9000 on Sat Dec 09, 2006 10:32 am

Hi Everyone!
I am looking for some answers to a few questions on a pair of SI Ecletus that I am looking at buying. Please help!
First off, I am looking at a pair of SI Electus that have been raised by the same family since they were hatched 11 years ago. Do to a recent death, they must get rid of the pair. They have not had any socialization in the past 3 months and are starting to bite and become unfriendly. WIth lots of attention, can they revert back to the loving pets they used to be?
The second question deals with breeding. They have produced chicks once, but they did not survive. The chicks were killed after spending the first two weeks of life in the nest box. Since then, they supposedly have laid eggs, but have not produced chicks. If given the correct nesting box (the one the previous owner is using is a 1foot cube that is placed at the bottom of the cage) and good diet, should I expect them to begin to produce fertile eggs again? How long does a hen produce clutches? Is there a "past the prime" for birds to lay eggs? I am unsure if they two are related, does that matter?
The hen appears annoyed with the male and plucks her chest. Would you suggest letting them breed, or let them be "pets".
Any help you can give would be a big help!
I have never owned an eclectus, but have always wanted to. My background with birds is umbrella cockatoos, lesser cockatoo and blue front amazons. This is breed is new to me.
