Postby staciaandrosie on Sat Sep 19, 2009 5:49 am

hello everyone, hope everyone and their fids are happy, healthy safe and sound. what im posting about is my little Rosie has 'mutant' feathers on her lttle back and i'm worried that this could mean there's something wrong with her. she seems her usual bright little self but she has green and one half yellow feather over half her back and would like to know what this couldve been caused by if she has eaten right?? thanks for any input you guys can offer, stacia

Has Rosie had these feathers since you got her or have they grown in since? If she's had them since she was weaned, then it may be just feeding her the right foods as she grows and the feathers should molt out normal. When in doubt, seek an avian vets advice.

Eclectus can be sensitive to pellets, medications, and allergy type foods. Personally, I don't think it's a good idea to feed any type of animal protein to parrots (beef, pork, and fish specifically) although many do enjoy some meat/animal protein, particularly even cooked chicken bones.

Land of Vos has a lot of good info on Ekkie diet

Feeding Feathers is another good place on providing a fresh diet, which most Ekkies seem to do well on

thank you for replying. rosie has had the green feathers since i got her and i only just noticed this yellowy one, i mean half is bright yellow, well its hard to explain. she isn't weaned yet, we are in the process of doing that and she's doing well. she eats silver beet, carrot, grapes, potatoe(sweet and normal), strawberries, blueberries, blackberries, rasberrys, pears, bananaum, has tried pasta and a couple of other things. she also picks at her seed mix. she has an app with a vet on wens but there are no avian specific vets in townsville or within a suitable drivind distance. are there any specific q's i should ask of them?? thanks again

Do you mean Townsville, as in QLD?

If so, there *should* be avian vets near you! Here, perhaps these will help.

    Graham Kevin Brown, Mr
    Clinic Name: Aachilpa Veterinary Hospital
    Address: 80 Tenth Avenue
    City/State: Railway Estate, Qld 4810
    P: 0414742415
    Email: gbro9844@yahoo.com.au

And check out this link.... perhaps there are others near you?

With a first vet visit, generally you want to get a fecal done to check for bacterial or fungal infections, and a full blood panel to check the overall health, perhaps even some disease testing. This gives you a good start base to go from for future references. There are quite a few articles on the first vet visit or well bird exams.

sorry i havent replied for ages. rosie's vet visit went sooo well. she's doing great the vet said that her mutant feather is probably from the probs she had with her formula as a really young baby and that it should come out with her first moult so i worried over nothing but i will always if one of my babies has any kind of problem so yeah, thanks all

The problem with Eclectus and yellow is :

When you notice a yellow stripe on the chest area below the legs and in front of the vent

These are not total feather coloring but rather a well pronounced "Stripe" horizontally

This is an indication of liver disease or the early on stages of such.

A yellow feather sounds like a hybrid which is very common in Eclectus. Since there are seven species and their cross breeding this amounts to not only a disparaging "contamination" of the species but also feather conditions that show this unusual out cropping.

Again there is nothing to support what is described only as "fear mongering" by the anti-pellets crowd, especially when using pellets designed specifically for "Eclectus" And furthermore no pellet manufacture says to feed pellets ONLY. It is always proper to feed in addition to a healthy pellet diet those fresh foods that each species needs. In the case of Eclectus fruit is the choice of many professional breeders (like myself) and be sure to feed only FRESH ORGANIC FRUITS AND VEGS.

thank you so much. rosie is doing very well and tonight if possible i'll post a vid of her on u tube. te yellow feather is not really a whole yellow feather, it's half a feather in between where her wings meet at her back but highish, closer to head than tail. she's starting to scream though cause i used to run to her when she did before and she's caught on that it gets me to her, how do i stop her screaming, i've tried toys and treats and covering her but she'll go on for hours and also, the other night my neighbor watched her for a little while and she apparently climbed her cage then slid back down onto her back, rolled over and got up, shopuld i be rushing her to the vet's as other than that she seems normal happy and healhy?? anyhow thanks for yor help, i LOVE this place!!!

Hi The only thing I would like to add is that Ekkies need a high vitamin A diet. Just look up foods with vita A in them like sweet potato and include them in her diet. Good luck
Always love you bird as you love yourself or more.
