Baby Eclectus Food

Postby solitaryman on Fri Jun 12, 2009 4:49 pm

I see that some people bottle fed their baby eclectus, so I want to know what kind is it. My pair just hatched 2 babies and I am so happy..should I let the parent feed them or should I step in.

I have never heard of "bottle fed" parrots, but many breeders and handfeeders do use syringes, bent spoons, or even dixie cups. Quite a few companies make handfeeding formula, and although Kaytee is the most commonly found, I don't know which is the best.

As to whether or not you want to handfeed, well assuming you have good parents, its up to you... although it is usually believed that handraised parrots make better pets and are thus easier to sell. Many breeders usually remove the chicks around the 2-3 week age mark, although I don't know if it differs much in the larger parrots.

Thanks. To my observation, the parent is doing great feeding him/her so far, so I guess I'll let it feed until it's about 1 month before I separated it.

It's been my impression that it is better for the babies if the parents feed them for a while before pulling the babies to hand feed. If the babies are going to be pet birds, then it is usually better to hand feed them so they will be tamer and used to people. I don't have an Eclectus pair, but the two breeders I know who did, pulled their babies around the 3 week mark. I think Purpleheart has Eclectus? He is pretty knowledgeable about them so hopefully, he will see this and post the ideal time to pull babies.

I pull at two weeks, use Pretty bird (low protein) and offset with Lory nectar between feedings in a water bottle turned nectar.
Begin solid feeding with a large base of fruit left in a bowl in the cage when they start to notice and chew on things (usually around the second month or later.) I also use the Pretty Bird Eclectus pellets left in the cage and feed a fresh food diet. This works for all three of my species of Eclectus (S.I., Grand, and RS) both young and adult.

Eckys don't wean til around the 20 weeks of age mark, so you don't have to rush. Since you are not an experienced handrearer I recommned you hold off on pulling the chick til it is well and truely starting the feather. They are so much sturdier and easier to manage than little tiny ones. Good luck! Eckys are the best!!!

My baby eclectus just died. I feed him fresh cooked broccoli, carrots, rice and corn, but somehow he just died. I'm so devastated right now. What should I have done differently instead?

Somehow the mother does not feed him anymore, so I pulled him out and hand fed him last week.

I'm sorry to hear about your baby Eclectus. There really isn't enough information in your post to know what went wrong.

Were you still giving the baby hand feeding formula? How old was the baby? It sounded like it was still too young to be on the diet you were feeding it in your last post.

Are you experienced at hand feeding? If not, many things can go wrong. Were you feeding the baby enough food? Could you have accidentally aspirated it during hand feeding? Was the formula the correct temperature? If the formula is too hot, you could burn the crop. If the formula is too cold, sometimes the formula doesn't digest well and may stay in the crop.
